Our inspiration was the increasing popularity of parasols among both men and women in recent years. Just popping up a parasol lowers body temperature and protects the skin from UV damage--and we wondered whether we could create a cosmetic that would provide that same delightful sensation. We worked to create the perfect formula--one that would cool the skin without irritating it, feel wonderful to the touch, and have a beautiful finish. In short, we wanted a balanced, multifunctional product.
The result is a formula that is gentle enough for sensitive skin yet with a lasting cooling effect--and that rinses away easily in soap and water. It also holds up well against the humidity that face masks generate on hot days.

How does Cool Comfort cool?
Applying a menthol derivative (a cooling agent called menthoxypropanediol) to the skin creates a cooling sensation that, while it doesn't actually lower body temperature, stimulates cell sensors called transient receptor potential (TRP) channels*. These channels use different mechanism than the five senses.
(*TRP channels made the news in 2021 when the discovery of thermosensory and mechanosensory receptors earned the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.)
When menthol derivatives are applied to the skin, TRP channels send signals to the brain that give the illusion of cooling--though the temperature of the skin actually remains the same.
Menthoxypropanediol also produces an enhanced cooling sensation when it comes in contact with moisture. The effect is very similar to what happens when you drink a glass of water after having a mint--the mouth feels even cooler, right?
A similar principle creates an even stronger feeling of cooling when sweat or humidity inside a face mask generates moisture against the product--not just when you first apply it.
