How does Cool Comfort cool?
Applying a menthol derivative (a cooling agent called menthoxypropanediol) to the skin creates a cooling sensation that stimulates cell sensors called transient receptor potential (TRP) channels*. These channels use different mechanism than the five senses.
TRP channels send signals to the brain that create a cooling sensation.
Menthoxypropanediol also produces an enhanced cooling sensation when it comes in contact with moisture. The effect is very similar to what happens when you drink a glass of water after having a mint--the mouth feels even cooler, right?
A similar principle creates an even stronger feeling of cooling when sweat or humidity inside a face mask generates moisture against the product--not just when you first apply it.
*TRP channels made the news in 2021 when the discovery of thermosensory and mechanosensory receptors earned the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
